Doncaster May 6 2yo race review

Doncaster 1750 Sat May 6 Novice Stakes 5f, Class 5, 1m0.39s (slow by 2.49s) Good to Firm Mutanaaseq . Won nicely on debut at Bath Apr 21, penalised here. Pinged the lids and went straight to the front alongside Bengali Boys, allowing him a half-length lead near halfway. Went for home at same time as that runner, 2f out, fought on well and just got the bob in on the line. Better jockey aboard probably made the difference. 15/8 into 11/8. Bengali Boys . Won low rating race at Beverley Apr 19, but well supported from flying 2yo stable. Led, went for home at 2f, stride for stride with Mutanaaseq, 3lb claiming jockey perhaps not strong enough to get him home. Backed 4s into 3s. Story Minister . Mar 9, £45k yearling. Half-brother to multiple winners, full sister Beldale Memory won first two starts, including Listed race at York. Slow to begin but no ground lost as pace was moderate. Poised nicely at 2f to make his run, kept on well but unable to go with the front two. Nice debut. Jim...

Doncaster Apr 29 2yo race review

Doncaster 1725 Sat Apr 29 Newcomers Maiden Stakes 5f, Class 5, 1m0.04s (slow by 2.14s) Good to Firm (Good in Places, watered) Koditime . Feb 1, £65k yearling from maiden dam. Away nicely, parked midfield right beind Dahik. Accelerated nicely when the gap opened. One tap with the stick and a comfortable win. Impressive. Dahik . Mar 6, £62k yearling. Half-brother to five winners. First 2yo runner of the season for Roger Varian. Backed from 8/1 into 5s. Jumped nicely, contested lead under comfortable hold. Given a bit more rein at 2f, challenged 1f out. A little green after a couple of strikes with the whip but couldn't match the winner. Will learn plenty from that. Jellmood . Mar 3. First foal, dam had form in South Africa and Dubai. Settled close to the pace and improved without effort to challenge approaching furlong. Given a couple of cracks with the whip but unable to match the first two. Solid debut. Central City . Mar 28, €50k yearling. 8/1 into 9/2. Not the fastest awa...

Brocklesby review - Division II

Doncaster 4.45 Sat Apr 1 Brocklesby Stakes, Div II, Class 4 5f 1m1.31s (slow by 3.41s on RP standards) Good to Soft. Requinto Dawn , Apr 19 foal. Started well, parked behind the leaders until halfway. Angled into the clear as leaders faded and kicked away for an impressive win. Ran fastest sectionals for each of the last three furlongs. Should be more to come. The Love Doctor , Mar 11. From the final crop of the now-deceased Elnadim. A little wayward getting bumped around in the pack and never really settled. Being pushed along from the 3f, much earlier than third and fourth but stuck on well to claim second near the line. Backed from 15/2 into 9/2, stable obviously think plenty of him. Will be better if able to settle. Black Orange Apr 21. Unwanted at the sales, already with cheekpieces and a 7lb claimer. Jumped well, sat up on the pace and fought on well at the finish. Winner looks smart and was only just edged out of second near the line. Can't see him going to Royal ...

Brocklesby review - Division I

Continuing on with the 2yo reviews... Doncaster 4.10 Sat Apr 1 Brocklesby Stakes Div I, Class 4 5f 1m1.09s (slow by 3.19s on RP standards) Good to Soft. I didn't realise this race was worth so little in prizemoney until Doncaster officials said they'd like to put some more money into it in future to raise it above the £10k threshold for dividing a race. Last year's winner The Last Lion continued throughout the season, closed with a win in the G1 Middle Park Stakes rating 116, and is now making €12k a shot a stud. Ravenhoe won in 2015, peaked at 87 as a juvenile and now runs on the AW rated 70. Cock of the North peaked at 102 and hasn't raced (in the UK) since his debut year. 2013 winner Mick's Yer Man now runs under the name Always Win in Hong Kong. He peaked at 107 as a 2yo. With such a relatively small purse, there's no huge incentive to run early. Don't be surprised if several of these are still maidens when they turn three. Santry , a Feb 5 foal ...
